How to Renew Car Registration Online in Dubai: Step by Step
You can renew your car registration online in Dubai through the RTA website or the Dubai Drive app, provided three things are already true: your insurance is active and visible in the RTA system, your fines and Salik are clear, and your vehicle has either passed its technical inspection or is under three years old and exempt. The transaction itself takes ten to fifteen minutes and the digital Mulkiya arrives immediately.
The online route is not a shortcut around the requirements. It is the same set of checks, run automatically. This guide covers the sequence, and what to do when the system refuses.
Can every renewal be done online?
No, and it is worth knowing which category you fall into before you start.
Straightforward online cases: a car under three years old with active insurance and no outstanding fines. Nothing physical is required. The whole thing is administrative.
Online, but only after a visit: a car over three years old. The inspection has to happen in person at an authorised centre. Once it passes, the result appears in the traffic system and the online renewal proceeds normally.
Cases that need a counter: anything with a block on the file that the portal cannot resolve. A mortgage delinquency flag, a documentation mismatch, an unusual ownership structure. The system will tell you it cannot proceed, but it will not fix the underlying issue.
Before you open the app
Three preparations save most of the frustration.
Confirm the insurance is linked, not just purchased. This is the single most common cause of a failed online renewal. Your policy can be fully active and paid for, and still invisible to the RTA because the insurer has not uploaded it. Call them and ask for confirmation that it has been registered against the vehicle.
Check fines across all emirates. Fines issued in Abu Dhabi or Sharjah register against your traffic file and block a Dubai renewal. The RTA app shows the full picture; so does the Dubai Police app.
Verify your Emirates ID and licence are current. The RTA cross-checks ICP records live. An ID that expired last month stops the renewal at the first step, and no amount of retrying changes that.
Renewing through the RTA website
1. Sign in
Go to the RTA portal and log in with UAE Pass. This is faster than maintaining separate RTA credentials and it pulls your identity records directly, so there is nothing to upload.
2. Open vehicle licensing services
Navigate to the vehicle services section and choose the registration renewal service. Your vehicles appear listed against your traffic file.
3. Select the vehicle
Pick the car you are renewing. The system then runs its verification: insurance status, inspection status where applicable, fines, Salik, and any restriction on the vehicle or your file.
4. Clear anything flagged
Outstanding fines and Salik can usually be paid in the same session rather than sending you elsewhere. Settle them and the check re-runs.
5. Pay the renewal fee
By card or through DubaiPay. The amount depends on the vehicle category, and the Knowledge and Innovation fees are added automatically.
6. Choose how you receive the card
The digital Mulkiya is issued immediately regardless. You can additionally have a physical card couriered to your registered address for a small fee, or collect it from an RTA centre.
Renewing through Dubai Drive
The app follows the same sequence with a mobile interface. Log in, open the vehicle section, select the car, choose registration renewal, let the verification run, pay, and receive the card. Functionally identical; it is a matter of which you find easier.
Dubai Now also offers vehicle registration renewal for eligible customers, with the same underlying checks.
Is the digital Mulkiya actually valid?
Yes, within the UAE. The digital registration card held in the Dubai Drive app carries the same legal standing as the printed card. Police and RTA officers verify it by scanning its QR code. You can drive immediately after the online confirmation; there is no waiting period while a card is in transit.
The exception worth knowing: GCC border crossings. Officials in Oman or Saudi Arabia check paper documents and may not have access to the UAE digital system, so carry the physical card if you drive across borders.
Why your online renewal was refused
The portal names the blocker, but the message is sometimes terse. The usual causes:
- The vehicle needs an inspection. Over three years old and not yet tested this cycle. Nothing online will resolve this.
- The inspection result has lapsed. A pass certificate is valid for a limited window. Leave it too long and you pay for another test.
- Insurance is not in the system. Active but unlinked. The insurer has to push it.
- Fines outstanding, including from other emirates.
- Salik or parking charges unpaid.
- Expired Emirates ID or driving licence.
- A restriction on the vehicle or traffic file, which usually needs a counter visit.
If you have cleared something and the system still refuses, give it time. Fine payments can take up to a day to propagate, and ICP record updates after an Emirates ID renewal are not always instant.
Do you need an appointment?
Not for the online renewal itself — that is the point of it. But if your car requires a technical inspection, that does need a booking at most Dubai testing centres now, and turning up without one either costs more or is refused outright.
So the honest answer is that for a car over three years old, the renewal is not really an online process. It is a visit to a testing centre, followed by an online transaction that takes a few minutes.
The part that is not online
That inspection visit is where the time goes. Booking a slot, driving across the city, waiting, and driving back. If the car fails you do it again.
That is the part we take off your hands. We collect the car, take it through the test, handle any fines, complete the renewal and return it with the new registration inside. You never open the portal. See how it works for the full sequence, or our pricing for what it costs.
Frequently asked questions
How long does online renewal take?
Ten to fifteen minutes once the prerequisites are met, with the digital Mulkiya issued on payment. The preparation — insurance, fines, inspection — is what takes real time.
Can I renew online without an inspection?
Only if the vehicle is exempt, meaning under three years old from first registration. Otherwise the inspection must be completed and passed before the online renewal will proceed.
Do I need a physical card?
Not for driving in the UAE. The digital version is legally equivalent and officers scan it. Order the printed card if you cross GCC borders or simply prefer having one.
Can I renew someone else’s car online?
The renewal runs against the registered owner’s traffic file and identity records, so it has to be done from that owner’s account. A service provider can handle the process on an owner’s behalf with the right authorisation.
What if my insurance expires before the new registration year ends?
The RTA requires the policy to cover the new registration period, so a policy expiring partway through will not satisfy the check. Renew the insurance for a full term first, then renew the registration.
RTA services, fees and requirements are set by the authority and change from time to time. Confirm current requirements through official RTA channels before completing a transaction.
