Car Registration Renewal Cost in Dubai: Full Fee Breakdown
A standard private car renewal in Dubai costs somewhere around AED 550 to 650 all in, once the RTA renewal fee, the technical inspection and the smaller administrative charges are added together. A car under three years old skips the inspection and comes in considerably lower. Insurance sits outside all of this and is a separate market cost.
Here is what each line item is and when it applies.
The charges, one by one
Registration renewal fee
The core charge, in the region of AED 350 to 420 for a light private vehicle. This is what the RTA takes to extend your registration for another year. Motorcycles, heavy vehicles and commercial categories are priced on their own scales, with heavy vehicles costing meaningfully more.
Technical inspection
Around AED 150 to 170 for a light vehicle, and it applies only to cars more than three years old from first registration. Newer vehicles are exempt and this line disappears entirely from their total.
Knowledge and Innovation fees
A fixed AED 20, applied to the transaction. Small, but it appears on every renewal and on the inspection separately.
Registration card delivery
Optional, roughly AED 25 to 35 to have the physical card couriered to your registered address. The digital Mulkiya is issued free and is legally equivalent within the UAE, so this is genuinely optional unless you cross GCC borders.
Re-test after a failure
Charged at a reduced rate compared with the original inspection, provided you return within the permitted window and to the same testing company. Miss the window and you pay full price for a new test.
Walk-in premium
Where a testing centre still accepts walk-ins without an appointment, it carries a surcharge. Booking ahead avoids it.
What a realistic total looks like
Car under three years old: renewal fee plus the Knowledge and Innovation fee, so broadly AED 370 to 440. No inspection, no testing centre visit.
Car over three years old: renewal fee, inspection, and the administrative charges. Expect roughly AED 520 to 610 before any optional card delivery.
Car over three years old that fails and needs a re-test: add the re-test fee plus whatever the repair costs, which is the genuinely unpredictable part. A blown bulb is trivial. Brakes or emissions are not.
What is not included
Insurance
Mandatory before the RTA will process a renewal, but priced by the insurance market rather than the authority. Comprehensive cover on a mainstream family car typically runs into the low thousands of dirhams annually, varying with the vehicle’s value and age, your claims history and the level of cover. Third-party liability is cheaper and is the legal minimum.
Shop this properly. It is by far the largest number in the whole exercise, and the gap between quotes for identical cover is often substantial.
Outstanding fines and Salik
Not a renewal charge as such, but they must be cleared before the renewal can proceed, so they land in the same bill in practice.
Repairs
Anything the inspection flags.
Late renewal penalties
Dubai allows a 30-day grace period after expiry with no late fee. Beyond that a monthly late charge accrues until the renewal is completed.
The penalties for driving on it are a different matter: a fine in the region of AED 500, black points on your licence, and vehicle impoundment. If the registration has been expired for more than three months, expect a re-inspection to be required regardless of when the car was last tested.
And the uninsured exposure behind all of that: most UAE motor policies are conditional on valid registration, so an accident during the lapsed period may not be covered at all.
Where a service fee fits
If you use a service to handle the renewal, their fee sits on top of the government charges. The RTA fees themselves do not change — they are passed through at cost. What you are paying for is not having to book the inspection, drive to the centre, wait, drive back and then complete the paperwork.
Our own fee and what it covers is set out on the pricing page. The RTA charges above are passed on exactly as billed.
Reducing the total
Three things genuinely move the number:
Compare insurance quotes properly. This is the biggest line by a wide margin and the one with the most variation.
Prepare the car before the inspection. Check bulbs, tyre tread and tint, remove unapproved stickers, bring it clean with the emergency kit accessible. Most re-tests are caused by things that cost almost nothing to fix in advance.
Do not let it lapse. Late charges accumulate monthly, and a lapse beyond three months triggers a re-inspection you would otherwise not have needed.
Skipping the physical card saves AED 25 to 35, but that is noise next to the other three.
Frequently asked questions
How much is renewal for a car under three years old?
The renewal fee plus Knowledge and Innovation charges, so broadly AED 370 to 440. There is no inspection requirement, which removes the largest secondary cost.
Do I have to pay for the physical registration card?
Only if you want one. The digital Mulkiya is issued at no extra cost and is legally equivalent within the UAE. The printed card carries a small courier fee and is worth having for GCC border crossings.
Is insurance included in the renewal fee?
No. Insurance is a separate purchase from an insurer, priced by the market. The RTA only verifies that an active policy exists before processing the renewal.
What does a re-test cost after a failure?
Less than the original inspection, provided you return within the permitted window and to the same testing company. Outside that window it is charged as a new test at full price.
Are the fees different in other emirates?
Yes. Each emirate’s authority sets its own schedule, and the renewal has to be processed through the authority that issued the registration rather than through the RTA.
Do fees change?
Periodically. The figures here are for planning. Confirm the exact amount at the point of payment, since published schedules are updated from time to time.
RTA fees and penalties are set by the authority and change from time to time. The amounts here are indicative and intended for budgeting. Confirm current figures through official RTA channels before completing a transaction.
